Lower back pain is one of the most common causes for visits to the doctor.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) states that lower back pain is the most common cause of job-related disability. About 80 percent of people living in America are expected to experience lower back pain in their lifetime.

The most common problem faced in Lower back pain is having hassles sleeping gently.

Here are the secrets to have a perfect refreshing sleep in your pain:

1. Put a pillow Under your abdomen and sleep on your stomach.

Some people say that sleeping on your stomach is bad for back pain. This is somewhat true because sleeping on your stomach may result in adding stress to your neck.

But if you find it comfortable resting on your stomach, you don’t have to go for another position. Instead:

  1. Place a pillow under your lower abdomen and pelvis to relieve some of the stress off your back.
  2. You may  choose to use a pillow under your head, depending on how you feel while lying in this position

What’s the point of sleeping in this position? This position helps you relieve the stress that is placed between your discs in the vertebrae.

2. Sleep on either one of the sides with a pillow between your knees.

If you are uncomfortable lying flat on your back, try shifting over to one of your side:

  1. Lay in a position such that your right or left shoulder along with the rest of that side of your body making contact with the mattress.
  2. Place a soft pillow between your knees.
  3. Use a small pillow as added support, if there's a gap between the mattress and your waist.

Whether you use one pillow or go for two, you should not always be sleeping on the same side. Doing so may cause issues like muscle imbalance and even scoliosis.

What’s the point of sleeping in this position? Sleeping on your side alone won’t make you sleep well. The main trick is that it’s using a pillow between your knees. The pillow will keep your spine, pelvis, and hips aligned.

3. Sleep with your back curved forwards in a fetal position.

You may want to try sleeping on your side with your back curved forwards in a fetal position, if you have a herniated disc:

  1. lay on your back and then roll over gently onto one of your sides.
  2. Tuck your knees into your chest and get yourself comfortable.
  3. Don’t forget to switch sides from time to time to prevent any imbalances.

What’s the point of sleeping in this position? The discs are soft cushions between the vertebrae in our spine. Herniation happens when part of a disc comes out of its normal space, causing weakness, nerve pain, and more. Curling the back into a fetal position opens the space between vertebrae.

4. Place a pillow under your knees and get laid on your back.

Sleeping on the back may be the best position for some people to relieve their back pain:

  1. Lay straight on your back in a normal way.
  2. Place a soft pillow underneath your knees. The pillow works to maintain that curve in your lower back.
  3. You may place a small, rolled-up piece of cloth under the small gap of your back for added support if you wish
